Lifelong Learning

The purpose of lifelong learning is to lay the groundwork for sustainable social, economic and environmental development. Citizens should have enough power to anticipate and solve the permanent changes of society, environment and economy, which is clearly accessible in learning cities.

Lifelong learning is a very important way of empowering citizens, providing them with many educational opportunities to develop their skills, competencies and attitudes for continuous improvement. It is obvious that most cities in the world have enough facilities and capabilities to push their residents towards constant learning. The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities is an international policy-oriented network that provides motivation, practical knowledge and best practices to member citizens of learning cities to guide them on a path of constant learning towards sustainable development.

Although each city has its own unique characteristics, cities have special characteristics when it comes to learning. Learning cities at all stages of development can significantly benefit from sharing ideas with other network member cities on a new problem that may have already happened in another city. The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities supports lifelong learning among network member cities by creating pathways for communication, promoting dialogue, active learning, strengthening partnerships, building development capacity and tools to motivate and recognize progress among network member cities.
